Ferritin: what your level actually means
Also known as: Serum Ferritin · Updated 19 Aug 2026 · Educational — not medical advice
The short answer: Ferritin measures your iron stores — the fuel tank, not the fuel line. Below ~30 ng/mL means stores are depleted, often before hemoglobin drops. It's the earliest and most sensitive sign of iron deficiency.
Where does your value sit?
This Ferritin value is inside the normal range. Your lab's printed reference range takes precedence — ranges vary slightly between laboratories.
What Ferritin tells you
Ferritin is the protein that warehouses iron in your body. Low ferritin with normal hemoglobin means you're running on reserve; treating at this stage prevents full anemia. (Illustration is schematic.)
Common reasons it rises
- Inflammation or infection — ferritin rises with inflammation even when iron is normal
- Liver conditions
- Iron overload (rarer, often genetic)
And reasons it runs low
- Low iron intake or absorption
- Blood loss — including heavy periods
Could a medicine be moving this number?
These medicines are known to shift Ferritin. Seeing one you take does not mean it is the cause, and it is never a reason to stop on your own — it is a reason to ask whether your result needs reading in that light.
Never stop or change a prescribed medicine because of a lab result. Take the result and your medicine list to whoever prescribed it.
What should I eat?
Eat freely
- Vegetables, fruit, and whole grains — A balanced diet without extra iron supports overall health
- Curd, milk, and dairy in moderation — Calcium can modestly reduce iron absorption from food
- Tea or coffee with meals — Tannins in tea and coffee reduce iron absorption
- Legumes and plant proteins — Plant iron absorbs less easily than iron from meat
Go easy on
- Red meat and organ meats — High in easily absorbed iron that can add to overload
- Iron-fortified cereals and drinks — Extra added iron is unhelpful when stores are already high
Best avoided
- Iron or vitamin C supplements without advice — Can raise iron absorption further without medical guidance
- Alcohol — Adds extra strain to a liver already handling excess iron
If your Ferritin is low instead
Eat freely
- Fish or chicken, if you eat them — Easily absorbed iron from animal sources
- Dal, rajma, chana, and legumes — Good plant source of iron, best with vitamin C
- Citrus fruit, tomatoes, or amla — Vitamin C improves iron absorption from plant foods
- Leafy greens like spinach and methi — Contain iron along with folate for red cell production
- Jaggery in moderation — A traditional source of iron, best with vitamin C foods
Show 1 more
- Eggs — A convenient source of iron and protein
Go easy on
- Tea or coffee right after meals — Tannins block iron absorption when taken together
- Dairy with iron-rich meals — Calcium competes with iron for absorption
Best avoided
- Calcium supplements taken with iron-rich meals — Reduces how much iron your body absorbs
- Skipping meals for long stretches — Irregular eating makes it harder to rebuild iron stores
One realistic day
- MorningWarm water with lemon, then soaked chana
- BreakfastEgg or chana chilla, orange or amla
- Lunch2 rotis, 1 katori rajma or dal, sabzi
- EveningRoasted peanuts, tea after an hour, not with the meal
- Dinner1 katori dal or chicken/fish, rice, leafy sabzi
Can I exercise?
Stop and get help if
- Chest pain, fainting or severe breathlessness
- Joint pain that is new or worsening
- Unusual fatigue or weakness
- Abdominal pain
Moderate activity is generally fine; a significantly high ferritin from iron overload needs your doctor's guidance first.
Your week
- 4-5 days: 30-minute brisk walk or cycling
- 2 days: light strength training
- Daily: gentle stretching
- Rest as advised if you are having treatment
Start here: A 15-20 minute walk most days, adjusted to how you feel
Skip for now
- Starting intense new exercise without medical clearance
- Iron supplements or multivitamins containing iron
If your Ferritin is low instead
Stop and get help if
- Dizziness or fainting
- Chest pain or a racing heartbeat
- Severe breathlessness with mild activity
Gentle to moderate activity is fine, but low iron can leave you breathless or tired faster than usual.
Your week
- 3-4 days: a 15-20 minute walk
- 2 days: gentle yoga or stretching
- Build up pace slowly as your energy improves
- Rest when you feel breathless or dizzy
Start here: A short 10-minute walk, increasing slowly as you feel stronger
Skip for now
- Sudden intense exercise while still very low on iron
- Standing up too quickly if you feel light-headed
Check with your doctor first: People with heavy periods, pregnancy, kidney disease, or a diagnosed iron overload condition should treat ferritin changes under a doctor's guidance.
General guidance for adults — not a personal diet plan. Your doctor or dietitian knows your full picture.

What to do next
Ask your doctor: “Is my ferritin low enough to explain my tiredness?”
Ask your doctor: “Oral iron or IV — what fits my level and symptoms?”

Questions people ask
My ferritin is low but hemoglobin is normal — am I fine?
You're at the early stage: stores depleted, production not yet affected. Many people already feel tired at this stage, and it's the ideal moment to treat — before anemia develops.
