The short answer: A resting blood lactate level is usually between about 0.5 and 2.2 mmol/L, and it rises temporarily and normally with vigorous exercise as muscles shift to producing energy without enough oxygen. In a medical setting, an elevated lactate measured at rest, especially above about 4 mmol/L, is taken far more seriously, since it can signal that tissues throughout the body are not getting enough oxygen.

What Lactate tells you

Is a high lactate always a medical emergency?
