The short answer: Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is generally considered lower-risk below about 30 mg/dL and elevated above 50 mg/dL, with levels in between considered borderline. Unlike LDL or triglycerides, Lp(a) is almost entirely determined by genetics rather than diet or lifestyle, and it typically stays fairly stable throughout adult life. Because of this, it is usually checked only once for most people, mainly to understand inherited cardiovascular risk that a standard lipid panel does not capture.
