The short answer: Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) normally falls between about 7 and 20 mg/dL in adults, reflecting how well your kidneys are clearing this waste product of protein breakdown. A high BUN can mean reduced kidney function, dehydration, or a high-protein diet, while a low BUN is less common and usually tied to liver disease or a low-protein diet. Some labs report "urea" directly, which is roughly 2.1 times the BUN value, so always check which unit your report uses.

What Urea tells you

Kidneys

When your body breaks down protein, it produces urea as a waste byproduct, which the kidneys are supposed to filter out and send to the bladder. Common reasons it rises

  • Reduced kidney function — the kidneys clear less urea when filtering capacity declines.
  • Dehydration — less fluid in the blood concentrates urea, even with normal kidney function.

  • Certain medicines — including some diuretics and steroids, can raise BUN.
