Why does splitting a calcium supplement into smaller portions matter?
The gut can only absorb calcium efficiently in relatively modest amounts at any one sitting; beyond that, the extra tends to pass through largely unused. Taking a large total amount all at once is therefore less efficient than spreading the same total across two or more smaller portions during the day, which allows more of it to actually be absorbed rather than wasted.
Why can't calcium and iron supplements be taken together?
Calcium competes with iron for the same absorption pathway in the gut, so taking them at the same time can meaningfully reduce how much iron the body actually takes up. Spacing them a few hours apart, rather than swallowing both together, allows each to be absorbed more fully. This same spacing consideration applies to some other medicines, including certain thyroid treatments and antibiotics.
