The short answer: NT-proBNP is typically under about 125 pg/mL in adults without heart failure, though the cutoff that counts as concerning rises with age, so what's borderline at 40 may be more expected at 75. It is released when the heart's chambers are stretched or under strain, making it the main blood test used to help confirm or rule out heart failure. A very low result is especially useful because it makes heart failure unlikely as the cause of symptoms like shortness of breath.

What NT-proBNP tells you
NT-proBNP (and the related hormone BNP) is released by heart muscle cells when the heart's walls are stretched from extra pressure or volume, as happens in heart failure. Common reasons it rises

- Older age — natural, gradual increases occur with age even in people without heart disease, which is why age-adjusted cutoffs are used.
- Pulmonary hypertension or significant lung disease — strain on the right side of the heart from lung conditions can also raise it.
And reasons it runs low
- No significant heart strain — a low NT-proBNP is one of the more reliable ways to make heart failure unlikely as an explanation for symptoms.
- Obesity — for reasons not fully understood, NT-proBNP tends to run lower than expected in people with a higher body mass, which can occasionally mask early heart strain.

What's the difference between BNP and NT-proBNP?
