The short answer: C-reactive protein (CRP) is normally below 5 mg/L in a healthy adult, and it's one of the fastest-reacting inflammation markers, capable of rising within hours of an infection or injury. A high CRP confirms inflammation is present somewhere in the body, though it doesn't identify the exact cause. A separate, more sensitive version called hs-CRP is used at much lower levels to estimate cardiovascular risk.

What CRP tells you
CRP is a protein your liver produces in response to inflammatory signals, and it rises and falls quickly, making it a good marker for tracking how an infection or flare-up is progressing in near real time. - Bacterial or viral infections — CRP can rise sharply within 24-48 hours.
- Autoimmune or inflammatory flares — conditions like rheumatoid arthritis raise it during active disease.

- Obesity — carries a mildly elevated baseline CRP in many people.
- Chronic infections — persistent low-grade infections can keep CRP elevated over time.

These medicines are known to shift CRP. Seeing one you take does not mean it is the cause, and it is never a reason to stop on your own — it is a reason to ask whether your result needs reading in that light.

What is a normal CRP level?

What is hs-CRP and how is it different?
hs-CRP (high-sensitivity CRP) measures the same protein but at much lower concentrations, used to estimate cardiovascular risk rather than detect acute infection. Typical cardiac risk bands are roughly under 1 mg/L (lower risk), 1-3 mg/L (average risk), and above 3 mg/L (higher risk), interpreted alongside cholesterol and other risk factors.
