The short answer: A normal red blood cell (RBC) count for adults generally runs from about 4.2 to 5.9 million cells per microliter, with men typically at the higher end and women slightly lower. This count reflects how many oxygen-carrying cells are in circulation, so a low result often points toward anemia while a high one can reflect dehydration or a bone marrow overproduction issue. It's usually read alongside hemoglobin and hematocrit rather than by itself.
