What Cervical Cancer Is

Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus, and is caused in nearly all cases by long-term infection with certain high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV). The path from infection to precancerous change to cancer typically unfolds over many years, which is exactly the window that screening and vaccination are designed to interrupt.

HPV and Who Is at Risk

HPV is extremely common and spreads through skin-to-skin genital contact; most sexually active people are exposed at some point, and most infections clear on their own without causing problems. Risk of cervical cancer rises when high-risk HPV persists rather than clearing, and is higher without regular screening, with smoking, or with a weakened immune system.

Symptoms

Early cervical cancer and the precancerous changes that come before it typically cause no symptoms at all, which is precisely why screening — not waiting for symptoms — is how most cases are caught. When symptoms do appear, they can include abnormal vaginal bleeding, unusual discharge, or pain during intercourse, and should prompt prompt evaluation.

Screening, Vaccine, and Diagnosis

Routine Pap tests and HPV tests, done on a regular schedule starting in the twenties, detect precancerous cell changes long before they become cancer, allowing simple treatment at that earlier stage. The HPV vaccine, given ideally before any exposure in preteens but beneficial through the mid-twenties, prevents the great majority of cervical cancers by blocking the high-risk virus types that cause it. A biopsy confirms diagnosis when screening finds a concerning result.

Treatment Landscape and Outlook

Precancerous changes are often treated with a minor procedure that removes the abnormal tissue, frequently preventing cancer from ever developing. Cancer that is found tends to be treated with surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy depending on stage, and cervical cancer caught early has a very favorable outlook. Combined, vaccination and screening make cervical cancer one of the most preventable cancers, and a gynecologist or gynecologic oncologist guides care at every stage.
