The Treatment Landscape

Nasal saline rinses can help clear allergens and mucus.

When symptoms are significant, persistent, and clearly linked to specific identified allergens, allergen immunotherapy, given as regular injections or under-the-tongue tablets over a period of years, is considered. It works by gradually retraining the immune system's response and is generally reserved for people whose symptoms aren't well controlled by medication alone.

Reducing exposure to known triggers, such as keeping windows closed during high pollen periods, using allergen-proof bedding covers for dust mites, and managing indoor humidity to limit mold, can meaningfully reduce symptom burden alongside medication.

An allergist can help when over-the-counter treatments aren't enough, symptoms are year-round, or immunotherapy is being considered. Most people achieve good symptom control with the right combination of avoidance and treatment, even if the underlying allergic tendency itself doesn't go away.
