What Actually Helps

A warm saltwater rinse, swished gently a few times a day, is one of the most commonly recommended home measures for a canker sore, easing pain and helping keep the area clean while it heals on its own, typically within seven to ten days. Avoiding known personal triggers — often acidic, spicy, or rough, crunchy foods that irritate the sore directly — genuinely reduces pain during that healing window.

Over-the-counter topical gels or pastes made for mouth sores can numb the area temporarily and are a reasonable option for pain during meals, alongside a soft, gentler diet while the ulcer heals.

03

Worth Trying — Harmless Even If Unproven

A soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, careful brushing around the sore reduce added irritation while it heals, and some people find a small ice chip held against a fresh sore eases pain, even without strong dedicated evidence for that specific step.

Reducing stress where possible is worth trying too, since ulcers seem to flare during stressful periods for some people, even though the exact mechanism isn't fully settled.

04

Skip These

Popping or picking at a mouth ulcer, or scrubbing it hard with a toothbrush, only reopens irritated tissue and slows healing rather than speeding it. Strong, undiluted hydrogen peroxide held directly against the sore for extended periods can also irritate healthy tissue nearby more than it helps.

05

When It Must Be Checked

Any mouth ulcer lasting longer than three weeks without healing needs a clinician's look — most canker sores heal on their own well within that window, and one that doesn't deserves proper evaluation rather than continued home treatment. The same goes for an unusually large or painful sore, or one that keeps recurring multiple times a month.

A mouth sore paired with high fever, difficulty swallowing, or swelling that affects breathing needs urgent attention, as does any sore that looks unlike a typical canker sore — hard, thickened, or unusually persistent in one exact spot.
