What Actually Helps

Ginger, whether as tea, chews, or a supplement, has reasonably solid evidence for easing nausea related to pregnancy, and is a common, low-risk option worth trying for that specific kind. The evidence is weaker and mixed for motion sickness, and uncertain for nausea tied to chemotherapy or surgery recovery, where it may help as an addition to standard treatment but shouldn't replace it.

Small, frequent, bland meals — think crackers, toast, or plain rice rather than a large or greasy plate — sit easier on an unsettled stomach than three big meals a day. Sipping clear fluids slowly, rather than gulping a large glass at once, also helps keep fluids down when the stomach is unsettled.

02

Worth Trying — Harmless Even If Unproven

Acupressure, usually applied at a point on the inner wrist through pressure or a wristband, is genuinely mixed in the evidence: it hasn't shown clear benefit for motion sickness in most trials, though some research on nausea related to cancer treatment looks more promising as an add-on. It's low-risk and reasonable to try, just not a proven fix on its own.

Fresh air, avoiding strong odors or greasy smells, and sitting upright rather than lying flat after eating are simple measures many people find genuinely settling, even without dedicated trials behind each one specifically.

03

Skip These

Forcing yourself to eat a full meal to "settle the stomach" often backfires, overwhelming a stomach that needs smaller amounts more often. Lying flat immediately after eating, similarly, tends to worsen nausea rather than ease it for most people.

Reaching immediately for anti-nausea medication left over from a previous illness or another person's prescription isn't a safe substitute for figuring out what's actually causing the nausea, especially if it's persistent or unusual for you.

Red Flags — When Nausea Needs More Than Home Care

Vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, severe abdominal pain, a stiff neck with fever, or nausea following a head injury are signs that need urgent medical attention rather than home remedies. Nausea paired with chest pain also deserves immediate evaluation.

Signs of dehydration — a dry mouth, dizziness on standing, very little urination, or vomiting that continues past 24 hours without keeping anything down — mean it's time to seek care, particularly in young children, older adults, or anyone with an existing chronic condition.
