Where the Eight Glasses Rule Falls Short

The widely repeated advice to drink eight glasses of water a day is not based on a specific study establishing that number as necessary or optimal for most people. Individual fluid needs vary enormously based on body size, activity level, climate, and how much water is already coming from food, since many fruits, vegetables, soups, and other beverages contribute meaningfully to total fluid intake.

This does not mean hydration does not matter. It means a single fixed number applied to everyone regardless of size, climate, or activity level is a poor substitute for paying attention to your own body's signals.

Thirst and Urine Color Are Better Guides

For most healthy adults, thirst is a reasonably reliable signal to drink, and urine color offers a simple, practical check: pale yellow generally suggests adequate hydration, while consistently dark yellow urine suggests it may be time to drink more. This is not a precise laboratory measure, but it is more responsive to an individual's actual needs on a given day than a fixed volume target.

Certain medications, supplements, and foods can temporarily change urine color without reflecting hydration status, so this is a general guide rather than an exact rule, and it works best as a rough daily check rather than a one-time snapshot.

Who Genuinely Needs More

Some situations increase fluid needs above what thirst alone might prompt, including hot weather, high physical activity or sweating, fever, vomiting or diarrhea, and pregnancy or breastfeeding. Older adults sometimes have a blunted thirst sensation and may need to be more deliberate about drinking regularly rather than waiting to feel thirsty.

People managing certain conditions, including some kidney stone types, may be advised by a clinician to target a specific higher fluid intake, which is a case where individualized medical guidance should take priority over general rules.

Overhydration Is a Real, if Less Common, Risk

It is possible to drink too much water, diluting blood sodium to dangerously low levels in a condition called hyponatremia, most often seen in endurance athletes who drink large volumes of plain water over several hours without replacing electrolytes, or occasionally in other situations involving very high fluid intake in a short time. This is uncommon in everyday life but worth knowing about, particularly for anyone training for long endurance events.

Sodium levels are typically checked as part of a standard metabolic panel, and unexplained low sodium on a lab report, especially alongside symptoms like confusion, headache, or nausea, is worth discussing with a clinician rather than assuming more water is always the safer choice.
