What Lung Cancer Is

Lung cancer starts when cells in the lung's airways or air sacs grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor that can interfere with breathing and, over time, spread to other organs. The two broad categories, non-small cell and small cell lung cancer, behave differently and are treated differently, which is part of why accurate diagnosis matters so much.

Who Is at Risk

Smoking remains the leading cause and the biggest driver of risk, with risk rising with the number of years and amount smoked. But lung cancer also occurs in people who never smoked, linked to radon exposure, secondhand smoke, certain workplace exposures, air pollution, or specific gene changes — a reminder that persistent respiratory symptoms deserve attention regardless of smoking history.

Symptoms and Screening

Early lung cancer often causes no symptoms, which is why screening matters; a persistent cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, or recurring respiratory infections warrant evaluation. Annual low-dose CT screening is recommended for adults within a defined age and smoking-history range, since it can detect cancer before symptoms appear, when treatment is most effective.

Diagnosis

A suspicious finding on imaging leads to a biopsy, where a tissue sample is examined under a microscope to confirm cancer type and specific genetic markers. Additional scans determine whether the cancer has spread, information that together with the tumor's genetic profile guides which treatment approach is likely to help most.

Treatment Landscape and Outlook

Treatment may involve surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy aimed at specific gene changes, or immunotherapy, often combined based on stage and tumor biology. Outcomes vary widely by stage at diagnosis, and cancers found through screening before symptoms start generally have meaningfully better outcomes than those found later. An oncologist and pulmonologist typically coordinate care, and quitting smoking at any stage improves treatment tolerance and outcomes.
