The Blood Sugar Range Doctors Call a Warning, Not a Diagnosis

In short

An HbA1c between 5.7 and 6.4 percent marks a reversible window before diabetes, and what happens during it can change the outcome entirely.

What the Numbers Actually Mean

HbA1c reflects average blood sugar over roughly the past two to three months, based on how much sugar has attached to red blood cells. A result below 5.7 percent is considered normal, 5.7 to 6.4 percent is labeled prediabetes, and 6.5 percent or above meets the threshold usually used for diabetes.

That prediabetes band is wide on purpose. It captures a large group of people whose blood sugar regulation has started to slip but has not crossed into diabetes territory, which is precisely why doctors treat this range as a window for action rather than a fixed sentence.

02

Why It Is Called Reversible

Research following large groups of people with prediabetes has found that a meaningful share return to normal blood sugar levels within a few years, particularly when they make changes early. Others progress toward diabetes, and a portion stay in the prediabetes range for a long time without moving either direction.

What separates these paths is rarely one dramatic change. Sustained shifts in eating patterns, regular movement, and modest weight loss, often in the range of five to seven percent of body weight, show up repeatedly in research as the factors most associated with returning to a normal range.

03

What Tends to Work

Movement that raises the heart rate for at least 150 minutes a week, spread across most days, is one of the most consistently supported habits for improving insulin sensitivity. Strength training adds to this effect because muscle tissue is a major site of glucose uptake.

On the food side, the pattern that helps most is not a single forbidden ingredient but a shift toward more fiber, more vegetables, and fewer refined carbohydrates and sugary drinks eaten in isolation. Pairing carbohydrates with protein or fat, and walking after meals, are small habits with outsized reputations in research.

04

Tracking Progress Without Obsessing

Because HbA1c reflects months of history, it is not a number to check weekly, and short-term swings in daily blood sugar do not need to cause alarm. Most clinicians recheck HbA1c every three to six months during this window to see whether the trend is moving in a helpful direction.

Uploading sequential lab reports to a report analyzer can make that trend easier to see at a glance than scrolling through separate PDFs. The goal during this window is steady direction over time, not a perfect number on any single test.
