What's Happening During the Night
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat relax during sleep enough to partially or fully block the airway, repeatedly interrupting breathing throughout the night. The Pattern That Points to It

Morning headaches, dry mouth, and difficulty concentrating during the day round out the common picture.
Because the person having the episodes usually isn't aware of them, a partner's observation is often what first raises the possibility, and that secondhand report deserves to be taken seriously rather than dismissed as ordinary snoring. How It's Diagnosed
A home sleep apnea test, using a portable monitor worn overnight, can screen for and often confirm sleep apnea without an overnight stay in a lab, and it's become the starting point for many people with a fitting symptom pattern. It measures breathing pauses, oxygen levels, and other signals throughout the night.
For more complex cases, or when the home test result is unclear, an in-lab overnight sleep study, called polysomnography, gives a more detailed picture, including brain activity and sleep stages. The CPAP and Treatment Landscape
Continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, is the most established treatment, using a machine that delivers a steady stream of air through a mask to keep the airway open during sleep. It's highly effective when used consistently, though the adjustment period and mask fit are common reasons people struggle with it initially.
For those who can't tolerate CPAP, alternatives include oral appliances that reposition the jaw, positional therapy for cases tied to sleeping position, weight management when relevant, and, for select cases, surgery or an implanted nerve-stimulation device. The Heart Connection, and Living With It
Untreated sleep apnea is linked to higher risk of high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms, heart failure, and stroke, since repeated drops in oxygen and disrupted sleep put ongoing strain on the cardiovascular system.
