Why Deficiency Is So Widespread

Vitamin D is unusual because the body makes most of its supply from sun exposure on skin rather than from food. Modern life works against that: indoor jobs, sunscreen, covering clothing, air pollution, and darker skin tones all reduce how much the skin can produce. Latitude and season matter too, since winter sunlight is often too weak for synthesis.

Blood levels are usually reported in ng/mL. Most labs consider below 20 ng/mL deficient, 20 to 30 ng/mL insufficient, and above 30 ng/mL sufficient for bone health. Because symptoms like fatigue or mild aches are so nonspecific, many people carry a deficiency for years without any obvious sign pointing to it.

The Sunlight Math

Getting enough vitamin D from sunlight alone requires bare skin exposure, not sun through a window or with sunscreen on, for roughly ten to thirty minutes several times a week, depending on skin tone, latitude, and season. Lighter skin generally synthesizes vitamin D faster than darker skin under the same sun exposure.

This math becomes far less favorable in winter months at higher latitudes, where the sun's angle is too low for effective synthesis regardless of time spent outside. It also does not account for skin cancer risk, which is why sunlight alone is rarely presented as a complete strategy on its own.

Food Sources Worth Knowing

Very few foods naturally contain meaningful vitamin D. Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines are among the richest sources, along with egg yolks and mushrooms exposed to UV light. Many countries fortify milk, some plant milks, and breakfast cereals, which is often where a meaningful share of dietary intake actually comes from.

Because natural food sources are limited, diet alone rarely closes a significant gap once someone is already low. This is why food is usually described as a helpful supporting piece rather than the main lever for correcting a deficiency that shows up on a blood test.

When a Supplement Makes Sense

A blood test result, not guesswork, is the most reliable way to know whether supplementation is worth discussing. People with limited sun exposure, darker skin, older age, obesity, or certain digestive conditions are more often found to be low and may benefit from a conversation about dosing with a clinician.

Vitamin D is fat-soluble, meaning it is stored in the body rather than flushed out quickly, so more is not automatically better. A clinician can weigh a specific test result against personal risk factors to suggest an amount that fits, rather than a one-size-fits-all number.
