What Counts as a Normal Resting Rate
A typical resting heart rate for adults falls somewhere between 60 and 100 beats per minute, measured after sitting quietly for several minutes, ideally first thing in the morning before getting up. It's a rough guide rather than a strict rule, since a normal rate for one healthy person can sit outside another healthy person's normal range.
The most useful reference point is usually your own baseline over time rather than the general range alone. A wearable device or a simple pulse check at the wrist, counted for a full 30 to 60 seconds, taken consistently over a few weeks, gives a far more meaningful picture than a single reading.

Why Fitness Lowers It
Regular aerobic exercise strengthens the heart muscle, allowing it to pump more blood with each beat, so it needs fewer beats per minute to meet the body's demands at rest. This is why many endurance-trained athletes have resting rates well below 60, sometimes in the 40s, without it being a problem for them specifically.
This adaptation builds gradually over weeks to months of consistent aerobic activity like brisk walking, cycling, or swimming, not from a single workout. A dropping resting rate over months of regular exercise is generally a sign of improving cardiovascular fitness rather than something to be concerned about.

What Else Moves the Number
Stress, poor sleep, dehydration, fever, caffeine, certain medications, and thyroid activity can all raise or lower resting heart rate temporarily or over longer stretches. An overactive thyroid tends to push the rate up, while an underactive thyroid can slow it down, which is one reason unexplained changes are sometimes checked alongside thyroid function.
Potassium and other electrolytes also play a role in the heart's electrical signaling, so significant imbalances can affect rate and rhythm, particularly in people on certain medications or with kidney conditions. These are contributing factors a clinician considers, not something to try to interpret alone from a single number.

When a Rate Deserves a Check-Up
A resting rate consistently above 100 beats per minute without an obvious cause like fever, dehydration, or intense recent exercise, or a rate below 60 accompanied by dizziness, fatigue, or fainting, is worth discussing with a clinician. The context matters as much as the number itself.
New palpitations, a racing or fluttering sensation, or a resting rate that has shifted noticeably from your own established baseline without a clear explanation are also reasonable reasons to get evaluated, even if the number alone still falls inside a broadly normal range.
