What Leukemia Is

Leukemia is a cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue, usually the bone marrow, causing abnormal white blood cells to crowd out normal blood cell production. It's broadly classified as acute (fast-developing) or chronic (slower-developing), and as myeloid or lymphocytic depending on which type of blood cell is affected — distinctions that matter greatly for treatment and prognosis.
